Nigel Greening

Nigel Greening of Felton RoadIf you could make wine anywhere, where would it be?

Bannockburn. Simple as that. Nowhere else in the world does Pinot thrive in quite the same way.

What pest causes you most trouble in the vineyard?

Rabbits. We shoot around 800 a year.

What impact have wine critics had on you (if any)?

They have played a profound part in building our business and our global reputation, for which we are grateful, but not in debt. They haven’t ever influenced what we do (nor have they ever tried to).

What is the best thing about wines made in your country? And the worst?

The best? Sauvignon Blanc created a global benchmark for New Zealand as a producer of distinctive, up market wine.

The worst? Sauvignon Blanc created a global benchmark for New Zealand as a producer of distinctive, up market wine.

What causes you most sleepless nights?

Excitement

If you weren't a winemaker, what would you like to have been?

The village repair man. I love fixing things.

Outside wine, what is your passion?

My only passion inside or outside wine is my wife. Other than that I cook, I play guitar, (Jazz and Blues mostly) and make furniture.

What was the best advice you ever received?

You can’t move a vineyard

Favourite wine/vintage from your winery?

2014, all of them. I’m in love with the vintage right now.

Signature dish?

If I’m cooking? Salt and pepper squid on black paella rice, (this week, anyway).

Favourite restaurant locally? Worldwide?

In Central? Rata, Queenstown

In New Zealand? Depot, Auckland (not the best, but the favourite)

In the world? The Fat Duck (boring, I know).
