2021 Burgundy: Louis Jadot

Mapping a vintage commune by commune

The wine town of Beaune sits plum in the heart of Burgundy, between Pinot-land in the Côte de Nuits to the north, and Chardonnay-land in the Côte de Beaune to the south. The town is the seat of many great wine businesses, foremost among them Louis Jadot. With 60 hectares of vineyard in the Cote d'Or alone, and plots in many of Burgundy's very finest vineyards, including a few monopoles, the house has a star-studded portfolio showcasing the best of what Burgundy has to offer.

The Maison was founded in 1859 by the eponymous entrepeneur Louis Jadot. These days, it is part négociant, part grower, part owner and part farmer. The domaine vineyards belong to various entities: Domaine Louis Jadot itself, Les Héritiers de Louis Jadot and Domaine André Gagey.

Previous cellarmaster and winemaker Jacques Lardiere properly set Jadot on the road to greatness. That path is carefully followed by his successor, Frédéric Barnier. Much of the production is now biodynamic. Monsieur Barnier has fully assimilated the lesson that great wines are made in the vineyard, not the cellar. There is a very egalitarian approach to winemaking - for instance, every wine in the range passes through a similar combination of oak barrels (a third each of first, second and third-fill). It makes for an unusually consistent range of wines, showcasing terroir character commune by commune across a vintage. /NT
