Ridge and Freeman: Happy Thanksgiving!

21 Nov 2022

Two great American wineries, two mixed case offers

If you are planning to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday, then there are two classic red wine matches for turkey: Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. Both of these versatile varieties are extremely well-represented across California, a state that has far more than its fair share of world-class wineries. We've taken the opportunity to put together mixed case offers from two of our absolute favourites.

Ridge Vineyards is an American wine legend. In the 1960s, they became one of the first wineries to start producing single-vineyard Zinfandel, after Paul Draper recognised the treasure trove of old-vine Zinfandel across the state. Lytton Springs and Geyserville are old vineyards that were planted to field blends over a hundred years ago; both are mainly Zinfandel, but with a smattering of other varieties planted by European immigrants. East Bench is a newer vineyard, planted on the optimum 'benchlands' on the slopes of Dry Creek Valley. It is 100% Zinfandel, from vines cultivated from cuttings from some of California's best and oldest.

A few valleys away and closer to the coast, Ken and Akiko Freeman are proving their long-standing belief that California can produce wines every bit as complex and compelling as those of Burgundy. The coastal climate is key here, with sunshine, morning fogs and then the afternoon winds off the Pacific playing their part in shaping intense, refined Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Over the twenty years since Freeman was founded, they have built long-term relationships with the area's best growers. Meanwhile, their estate vineyards Gloria and Yu-Ki have come of age and are producing top-quality fruit. /NT
