Japanese sake is a complex and versatile drink. Like wine, it comes in a diverse variety of styles, and has its own systems of classification. We're delighted to be welcoming sake expert Masayo Nuttall to Uncorked for an evening tasting and introduction to sake. Masayo will be leading us through a guided tasting of 8 distinctive, artisanal sakes. She'll talk us through how sake is made, and sketch out the classification systems that can help us understand a sake list. Bring your questions! Masayo will also be talking about food matching. She's very keen to show how well sake can match with western-style foods, so we won't be laying on sushi - instead we will be serving a small cheese and charcuterie selected to match with the sakes on tasting.
On the tasting:
Masumi Origarami - a lightly cloudy sparkling sake, rarely seen and on strict allocation
Dewazakura Daiginjo - a very fine, floral style of sake
Sohomare Kimoto Junmai Daiginjo - an example of the Kimoto sake-making method
Koshi no Kanbai Sai Junmai Ginjo - a more savoury, umami style of sake
Masumi Hiyaoroshi - the latest expression of an annual Autumn seasonal release
Akitabare Koshiki Junzukuri Junmai - a classic example from an historical brewery
Tamagawa Time Machine - heirloom amber sake
Kamoizumi Umeshu - plum sake
