Brunello, Rosso and olive oil on tasting this Thursday
It might seem odd for a wine merchant to be offering olive oil, but some of the finest Tuscan wine producers we work with also have an olive oil in their portfolio. It's Brunello season at Uncorked; we are busy offering the (great) 2019 Brunello vintage en primeur. The hilltop town of Montalcino sits in one of the driest corners of Tuscany, but it also benefits from a cooling corridor of sea air from the south-west. It's a winning combination that leads to full, structured, long-lived expressions of the Sangiovese grape variety.
Sesti are one of our long-time favourite Brunello producers - and they also make a mean olive oil. As olives mature, they change in colour from green to black (so green olives have been picked earlier than black ones). The Sestis hand harvest. They pick half the olives when they are green, then wait for the rest to turn black. It means more flavour complexity in the finished oil. They blend three classic Tuscan olive varieties, Corregiolo, Leccino and Moraiolo. Corregiolo olives bring the most robust flavours, (spicy and nutty), Moraiolo are the most delicate and subtly flavoured, and Leccino sit somewhere in the middle. The result is an oil that is punchy and peppery, pungent and full-flavoured.
We're getting excited about opening Brunellos just now. We'll have several on tasting this Thursday, along with Sesti olive oil.
