David and Felicity Newton-Johnson released their first vintage in 1997, using purchased fruit from the Hemel-en-Aarde valley. Early success convinced them to buy and plant their own farm in the valley at the turn of the millenium, and they now have 18.5 hectares planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their sons Bevan and Gordon are now in charge, with Bevan on the business side and Gordon and his wife, Nadia, in the cellar.
2021 was a superb vintage for South Africa, without excessive heat and with sufficient rainfall to provide for a healthy crop. We'll be tasting a selection of the 2021 releases from Newton-Johnson this Thursday (and their 2020 Family Vineyards Pinot Noir, so please join us.
