2019 Brunello is 'an embarrassment of riches', in the words of Eric Guido on vinous.com - and we couldn't agree more. Like its predecessor 2016, 2019 is a fabulous, balanced vintage throughout Montalcino. 'Finding a 2019 that doesn't show remarkable balance, vivid fruit and freshness is a difficult task… 2019 provides a blending of power and elegance in a way seldom seen while maintaining a lovely balance of acidity and structure'. In our recent tastings across the 2019 Brunellos, one property shone out for us - and was far from the most expensive. 2019 Lisini is lifted and cool-toned, full of an impressive energy, with notes of strawberry, sage and lavender. It's extremely appealing.
Lisini is among Montalcino's most respected estates. It is also one of the most traditionalist, as befits a family with a history that goes back to the time of the Medicis. Ludovica Lisini is proud to say they have never given into the whims of fashion and owned a barrique, but have always depended on old school slow fermentations and large format wood.
The south-west of Montalcino, where Lisini are based, is a warm area, but their vineyards are at altitude and it can get quite cool at night. As a result, their wines are always underpinned by freshness. The mixed soils (overlapping layers of clay, limestone and iron-rich earth) make for a complex, savoury character in the wine. The combination of altitude, soils and their low-yielding, old-vine Sangiovese makes for a Brunello of rare expression. /NT
