A great in-store offer on some very fine glassware
They have been a big hit in Bordeaux. On our visit to taste the 2021 vintage en primeur, we couldn't help but notice some elegant new glasses in town. They were fine and very light, with classically rounded bowl shapes and the logo 'Sy' etched discreetly onto the foot. They were a pleasure to hold and use. They are Sydonios glasses, and they are now used at over half of the 1855 cru classé estates.
Sydonius is the brainchild of one Antoine Schvartz, a native of Reims who'd been working in Bordeaux. Antoine had to do a lot of tasting in his job, but he'd never been quite satisfied with the glassware on offer. He was bothered by the duopoly Riedel and Zalto had over Bordeaux tasting rooms. The idea of creating his own glass nagged at him. Eventually, he gave in. He is at pains to point out how science-led his approach to glassmaking was. He read every learned paper he could find on the subject, and got Bordeaux University involved. Seven prototype glasses were tested by over 100 wine professionals. His goal was always a glass so easy and comfortable to use that it offers 'no intermediary between the wine and the taster' - he calls it the 'art of self-effacement'.
Has he succeeded? Come to our Copthall Avenue store and see for yourself. Sydonios comes in two ranges. Terroir is bigger, but we have found that the slightly smaller Racine glasses are a more natural fit for most people's hands and tables. (We have seen quite a lot more Racines than Terroirs in Bordeaux). There are three glasses in the Racine range. The Universel is multi-purpose. The Esthete is intended for heavy, tannic reds, and the larger, rounder Subtil is intended for lighter, more perfumed reds. They are mouth-blown and feather-light. In the Terroir range, Empreinte is multi-purpose, while Septentrional is aimed at lighter, more perfumed reds. There are also some very smart decanters.
