“A terrific portfolio of values” - Robert Parker
Free tasting at our Bishopsgate shop from midday
When was the last time you had something worth drinking from California for under £15? We can't remember either. Foxglove Cabernet and Chardonnay are modestly priced, even by the standards of their Central Coast zip code. The wines are crafted by Bob Varner, the winemaking half of the eponymous Varner Wines (coming soon) who've been angering the American mailing list crowd since Spicoli was "on dope". It is almost what these wines are not that defines them and sets them apart from their peers. The Cabernet is not over-extracted; it is elegant, perfumed and a true food wine. But we're perhaps happiest that the Chardonnay is not a blowsy, bloated, overripe vehicle for oak; it is a tropical, zippy testament to what quality Central Coast fruit can become in capable hands.
But, as on every Friday, we invite you to come and make up your own minds, as both wines (plus a couple more) will be open from midday. Come and taste! /CC
