Pierre Usseglio
Although still actively run by Jean-Pierre and his brother Thierry, Jean-Pierre`s son Gregory is more involved every vintage. He`s been active in both vineyards and cellar for ages. But the domaine`s philosophy hasn`t really changed since the late eighties when they had the confidence to seperate out a small amount of vines to make Mon Aieul and subsequently to make a barrel selection, including some new oak to make a prestige cuvee. There are other experiments going on including some non-commercial cuvees. But really, tradition rules the roost here.
The wines are pure - not dramatic or overdone in any way. They are certainly true to the terroir of the large Chateauneuf commune, in that the vines are planted across the whole area and are ideal to demonstrate what Chateauneuf is all about. They have the power of the south, while enjoying restraint and benefiting from an elegant and light touch in the cellar.
Work in both vineyard and chai is detailed and immaculate and eveywhere you go is orderly, clean and tidy, and the wines benefit from that. They also have energy and brightness. (CW 08/03/18)
