Walter Massa is the virtual single-handed saviour of the Timorasso grape variety. This was once ubiquitous in Walter`s home region of the Colli Tortonesi (around the town of Tortona in Piemonte) but over the years was almost entirely supplanted by the easier to manage Cortese. Walter`s epiphany was the depth of the wine produced when he vinified only from the surviving Timorasso vines in his family`s holdings. Tiny yields and immense concentration make this wine something special; extended lees contact give a creamy mouthfeel that may be mistaken for oak (but it has seen none) and the acidity will keep it developing for ages.
