‘Brouillard’ means ‘fog’ and this vineyard is said by locals to mark the fog line. There is a lower village section on heavier clay, but Louis Boillot’s vines are in the upper premier cru section next to Mitans. This is excellent, with a compellingly complex bouquet, raspberry and black tea, supple tannins and a vibrant line of acidity. Louis notes that his vines here are almost 80 years old. (NT 12/12/24)

The 2023 Volnay Les Brouillards 1er Cru has one of the highest alcohol levels (13.8%). The nose features black cherry and raspberry scents billowing from the glass. The palate is ripe and sweet, mixing dark cherry and black pepper aromas with a hint of licorice. It entertains a soupcon of exoticism on the finish. I would probably drink this early and savor its exuberance. 88-90 points

Deeper in colour than Les Angles and with a noticeably riper nose, along with a little more oak. Darker berries here, a slightly greater volume of fruit, with length, offering an additional degree of succulence. 90-92 points
