When the first vines went into the ground at Nyetimber in 1988, there were naysayers aplenty. England was too damp, too cold. The classic varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Meunier wouldn't reliably ripen. Leave bottle-fermented sparkling wines to the French. But what seemed quixotic then has since proven visionary. Nyetimber is at the head of the fast-expanding English sparkling wine industry, and has been buoyed by the recent run of warm summers and excellent harvests. Nyetimber's exceptionally consistent Classic Cuvee counts among the country's very best non-vintage sparkling wines. Their farming is a no-compromise operation. With very high-quality fruit they have blazed a trail to the top end of the market, through single vineyard and prestige cuvees.
We're delighted to be welcoming Jesse Banks-Hudson from Nyetimber next Thursday 8 December. He'll be talking about the estate, its history and its future, and he'll be leading us through a tasting of the range. Among other things we'll be trying the rare Tillington single vineyard cuvee and the 1086 prestige cuvees in both blanc and rosé. If you don't know Nyetimber, you don't know what England is capable of! /NT
