Turley Wine Cellars are the reference-producer when it comes to old-vine Zinfandel in California. Founded by Larry Turley in 1993, after he sold his half of Frog`s Leap, Turley explores the wealth of old vine parcels scattered across California. The California Old Vines cuvee is made up of sites which are either too small or too new to be a vineyard-designate wine; the vines range in age from 41 to 129 years old, and come from vineyards in Napa, Sonoma, Mendocino, Lodi, Contra Costa, Amador and Paso Robles. Reticent aromas of prunes and dried raspberry contrast to the palate, which is full of juicy, fresh red fruit. Ripe strawberry, black cherry, a hint of red grape. Tannins are very ripe and soft and the wine finishes with a bitter coffee character. Difficult to know how this will age, but this is a luscious, very drinkable wine right now. (JH 21/09/2023)
